Deep South's Oldest Rivalry

Today is the day! 'The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry' is the title given to the football rivalry between Auburn and UGA. The first showdown between the Tigers and Bulldogs occurred on February 20, 1892 at Piedmont Park in Atlanta; Tigers pulling out a win with the score 10-0. Auburn and UGA have played almost every year since 1898 except when World War I and World War II prevented games from being played. Despite the long rivalry, UGA and Auburn have never played each other in an SEC Championship game. After 114 games, Auburn holds a 54-52-8 lead. Today the Tigers will take on the Bulldogs between the hedges at 3:30 EST. So crack open a cold one and grill up some hot 'dawgs!' Cheers to an Auburn victory!

Dear 'Ol Aubie

I hate to admit that during several football games my attention has been drawn away from the action to one goofy Tiger prancing around in costumes on the sidelines. The official costumed mascot of Auburn University, Aubie, is adored by young and old. Aubie came into existence as a cartoon on the Auburn/Hardin-Simmons football program cover on October 3, 1959. An artist for the Birmingham Post-Herald, Phil Neel, created Aubie who continued to appear on Auburn program covers for 18 years. In 1979, Aubie came to life at the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament. Brooks-Van Horn Costumes in New York, N.Y (who also provided costumes for Walt Disney) designed and produced the first Aubie costume for $1,350. Since then, Aubie's fame has spread and led him to be a six time National Champion in Mascot Challenges.

Currently Aubie is #3 overall in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge and needs your help!
Make sure to vote for him every day by visiting: www.capitalonebowl.com

What is Auburn?

What is Auburn?
Far be it from me to try to answer that question. There are as many definitions of Auburn as there are Auburn men and women.
It would be safe to say, however, that Auburn is much more than a football game. It is much more than winning and losing.
It is a spirit. It is an attitude. It is a way of looking at life and at one another. It is, almost, a way of living. Unless you have experienced it, you will never know what it is; you will never understand it. Once you have experienced it, you will never be the same. A part of you will, forevermore, be an Auburn man or an Auburn woman.

Auburn Christmas

The day after Halloween, Target donned all of their Christmas decorations throughout the store. Call me a Scrooge, but there are two important events that shouldn't be fast-forwarded through between Halloween and the Christmas season; Thanksgiving and the Iron Bowl. However, for many of you preemptive Christmas crazies, November 1st starts your holiday season with decorations, Christmas tunes, and bad holiday driving. If you are already trimming your tree and drinking egg nog, check out these great hand-painted ornaments offered by the Atlanta Auburn Alumni Club that raise money for the Roy B. Sewell Memorial Scholarship Fund. While I may not agree with your early holiday hulabaloo, I do believe that buying an ornament to help out a future Tiger is what the holiday season is all about. To purchase an ornament, email: communications@atlantaauburnclub.org . May all your Christmases be orange and blue! War Eagle!

Tiger Tailgate Tunes

As much as we'd all love the Auburn Marching Band to provide musical entertainment at our own tailgates, alas, this is not possible. However, any good tailgate provides some good jams to add to the tailgate ambience. While varying ages and musical tastes choose different playlists, a good go-to playlist to please all Auburn fans is one filled with Classic or Southern Rock. Usually these songs aren't filled with abundant profanity, so Grandmas to Grandbaby Tigers can enjoy all these tunes. Here are a few suggestions to add to your tailgate playlist to please all Auburn fan ears! War Damn Eagle! Glory to 'ol Auburn!

Lesser of Two Evils

"The Game of the Season" as many sports analysts have called it, occurs this Saturday. We Auburn fans know that the real 'game of the season' falls right after Thanksgiving in Jordan Hare. Regardless, the LSU Tigers and Bama will face off at Bryant-Denny Stadium this Saturday. Any true AU fan will never cheer for Bama (no matter the circumstances). Therefore, this Saturday, I will be cheering for one of the other SEC Tiger teams. Since having a full-blown Low Country Boil in homage to LSU and Les Miles makes me cringe, why not have a classic Southern favorite this Saturday night: Shrimp and Grits! Filling and delicious, this recipe from Garden and Gun would be an excellent dish to take to a viewing party or to host one at your home! As they say in New Orleans, "Laissez le Bon temp rouler!" (Let the good times Roll!) By Roll, I mean that the R*ll T*de can Roll Out!

Shrimp and Grits
(from Garden and Gun Magazine)
(Serves 4–6)
3 cups water
1 cup stone-ground grits
1 ½ cups half and half
Salt to taste
Dollop of butter
Handful finely chopped tomatoes and onions
1 lb. peeled shrimp
½ cup white wine

Bring water to a boil, and add grits slowly. Cover. Reduce heat to low, and stir occasionally. As grits thicken, add half and half. Continue to cook for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

Shrimp Gravy
Put dollop of butter in frying pan, and sauté tomatoes and onions over medium-high heat until they begin to caramelize. Toss in shrimp. Using a wooden spoon, continue to stir shrimp, tomatoes, and onions until shrimp turn pink. Splash in ½ cup white wine, and continue to stir until shrimp are done and wine has reduced.
Plate grits. Pour entire shrimp and gravy over grits, and serve.

"Let Me See Ya Grill"- You Wanna See Me What? : Grilling Etiquette

Not all tiger fans have the gumption to grill at their tailgate. Frequently the manual labor of transporting and setting up a grill deters the faint of heart who do not thrive of on a good charcoaled meat. For the rest of us who love a good game day burger (reference previous blog posts for recipe suggestions), just as there are rules on the field, there are rules of the grill. Don't get a penalty this Game day by not following your grilling etiquette!

Grilling Etiquette
- Do not assume someone will bring lighter fluid and charcoal. If you plan to grill, bring your own just in case.
- Never ever flip, remove, or tamper with someone else's meat on the grill. Just as you wouldn't tamper with an artists pallet- don't tamper with a barbequer's masterpiece.
- Not everyone likes their burgers still mooing or black as night- try your hardest to grill in order to please the request of your fellow tailgaters.
- Although it's easy to get caught up in conversation, games, and tailgating; make sure uncooked meat is not left out of a cooler. Nothing worse than food sickness to ruin your Game day.
- "Only you can prevent forest fires." If you dispose of your coals and ashes near your tailgate, make sure to bring enough water to be certain all flames are out.

Happy Grilling!

The Samford Scarf!

As the temperatures drop outside, there is nothing worse than a cold Tiger at a tailgate. Luckily, one of my dear friends has created a solution to this chilly conundrum with a collection of collegiate scarves. Dunlop McCandless currently offers school spirit scarves for University of Florida, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, University of Alabama, and last but not least, Auburn University. When the Samford scarf appeared on the drawing board, I helped to design this Aubie look-a-like to don many a Tiger fan as a fantastic fall accessory. This past weekend the Samford scarf made its debut in Auburn for the AU vs UF game (War Eagle for the win!) and was a hit! Check out www.dunlopmccandless.com and snatch up the Samford scarf for the rest of this football season, or as a perfect holiday gift for all of your Tiger friends and family!

Tiger Tonic Tuesday: Red Eagles

This Tuesday's Tiger Tonic is a pitcher of Red Eagles (more commonly known as Red Roosters, but an Auburn name change was in order). On Saturday morning, while loading the cooler, donning your Gameday dresses and ties, watching ESPN Gameday, and prepping for a long day of tailgating; why not start the day off properly with a pitcher of 'Red Eagles?' A delicious and easy alternative to the standard morning mimosas and breakfast bloody marys, these 'Eagles' are a crowd pleaser! Cheers, to an Auburn victory! War Damn Eagle!

Red 'Eagles' (aka Red Roosters)

Ingredients
4 cups cranberry juice cocktail
3 cups orange juice
2 cups vodka
Garnishes: fresh cranberries, lemon slices

Preparation
1. Stir together first 3 ingredients in a large pitcher. Serve over ice. Garnish, if desired.

Beat Bama ( In All Things)

As Auburn fans, one rivalry exists that is not for the faint of heart; Auburn versus Alabama. Typically, the most well-known battle between these two schools occurs at the Iron Bowl. Throughout the year, other sporting match-ups occur (though definitely not as heated). However, there remains one feud between the Tigers and Crimson Tide that takes place off of the fields, courts, and pools. For seventeen years, students of Auburn and Bama have competed to see which University could raise the most money and food for their local food banks. Last year, Auburn students defeated the Bammers by donating 234,116 lbs. of food to the East Alabama Food Bank.

Today marks the beginning of the 2011 Beat Bama Food Drive! Although many of us may not be able to drop off cans in Auburn, there is still something we can do to help!
Text “BEATBAMA” and reply “yes” to 20222 to make a $10 donation to the food Drive.
or visit www.beatbamafooddrive.com to make an online donation!

Despite the recent national attention of this rivalry and the drama of Harvey Updyke's actions; let's support the rivalry that helps to feed hungry citizens of Alabama. War Damn Eagle! Beat Bama!

Welcome Back, Will!

Next Saturday, Auburn hosts the Florida Gators in Jordan Hare Stadium. However, Urban Meyer (who never beat Auburn in his coaching career) will not be leading the Gators onto the field. An old friend to Pat Dye Field at Jordan Hare Stadium will be returning to a familiar place. Will Muschamp not only received his Masters in Education from Auburn University in 1996, but also served as a defensive coordinator for the football team. In the 2006 and 2007, Muschamp jumped, chest bumped, and yelled from the sidelines to our boys in orange and blue.

After a quick journey to Texas, Muschamp returned to the SEC to coach the other boys in orange and blue; the Florida Gators. Let's give Will a warm welcome back to the Loveliest Village on the Plains, and show our Gator visitors true Auburn hospitality!

Welcome Gators! War Damn Eagle!

Game Day Buttons

Every home game, Auburn fans old and young make sure to visit the AU Bookstore to claim a cherished 'Game Day Button.' With clever slogans (my favorite being 'Lamecocks' for the AU vs South Carolina game in 2010), Tiger fans don these buttons with pride all day, and cherish them for scrapbooks and shadow boxes in the years that follow. For those Tiger Fans who prefer a more stylish button than the mass-printed bookstore version, look no further than these creative alternatives to Game Day buttons!

While visiting a fall craft show in North Carolina, I purchased a Game Day pin created by an AU Alum from a vintage tie. The pin can be clipped to a jacket, shirt, or a skinny headband. A nice addition to any Tiger Gameday Garb!

Another Auburn Alum and crafty friend of mine, has designed and created these fantastic fabric Game Day pins! Available in different colors (although no one should desire any but navy and orange), these pins provide a stunning substitute to the bookstore buttons. They can be purchased on her etsy store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/sweetdorabelle

Support a fellow Auburn Alum and add a new accessory like these pins to your Gameday Get-up!

An AU Gentleman's Gameday Garb

After covering the 2002 Auburn vs. Syracuse football game, Bud Poliquin, a columnist for the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper observed: "When you talk about the epitome of what the college football experience is all about ... that's it. Auburn is the epitome. You couldn't possibly be unaware of the spectacle, even if you were trying to be unaware. [...] I have descended into college football's Grand Canyon. I have stood in its Alps. I have gazed at its ocean sunset. I have attended a game at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, and I've been changed forever."
Within Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn men and women contribute to that epic atmosphere with their school spirit, sportsmanship, and most of all, Gameday Garb. This fall, the oldest clothier in the United States, Brooks Brothers, has introduced a collegiate line of apparel. Whether you are an alum headed to a corporate tailgate, or a fratty sitting on the front row of the student section; these crisp non-iron Auburn button-ups, and Tiger ties should reside in every Auburn gent's closet. No jort-wearing chap enters JHS, unless the Gators have come to visit. So boys, throw on your chinos, button-ups, bowties, and blazers, and cheers to the best dressed gentlemen in all of college football!

Tiger Tonic Tuesday

This Tuesday's Tiger Tonic is the "The Perfect Tailgate Cocktail" (according to Garden and Gun Magazine). Frequently fans develop a Gameday habit of purchasing a case of Bud Light, or sticking to a simple Jack and Coke. Why not mix it up with this unique cocktail? Even better, use a Mason jar (as shown) to serve it in! Although the drink requires some pre-tailgate prep to create the ginger syrup, I think you will thank yourself for mixing it up from the norm. Raise a glass and raise your standards for this delicious Tiger Tonic!

The Perfect Tailgate Cocktail
Ginger Syrup
½ cup sugar (fine turbinado)
½ cup water
¼ lb. fresh ginger root (peeled and finely grated)
In a small saucepot bring the sugar, water, and ginger to a boil. Turn off the heat, and allow to steep and cool for one hour. Strain off the ginger pieces, and reserve the syrup.

Cocktail
Large ice cubes
3 oz. Maker's Mark (Evan Williams, Bulleit, and Old Rip Van Winkle are solid alternatives)
1 tbsp. ginger syrup
2 slices fresh ripe pear
2 oz. soda water
Fill a 10 oz. glass with ice. Add Maker's Mark and ginger syrup, and stir. Add pear slices, and pour soda water to the top of the glass. Stir gently.

"Pump" it up!

Every tailgate strives to exhibit team colors in numerous forms- tablecloths, lights, centerpieces, you name it. Luckily for Auburn fans, orange coincides nicely with all things autumn! Instead of your regular display, why not add a Gameday Gourd?! Whether as a creative beer cooler or a table centerpiece, a pumpkin provides an extremely festive display of AU spirit.

The Grove at Ole Miss has developed a reputation of having the most over-the-top tailgating in the SEC. Why not welcome the Rebels to the tailgates of the Plains with our own tailgating creativity? One word of caution, make sure to stow your pumpkins when not in their presence. Never know which classless fans might enjoy smashing pumpkins!

Here, Piggy Piggy Piggy!

A quick hooray for Auburn defeating Spurrier and his Lamecocks this past Saturday; excellent performance!

This week, Auburn travels to battle the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. Hearing the familiar Razorback cry: "Woo, pig sooie!" only does one thing for me; makes me hungry! What a better way to prepare for the game than to enjoy some 'Tiger Meat' of ribs or pulled pork sandwich. Both recipes are prepared on a grill, so light up your grills at the tailgate, and enjoy a Gameday feast of our opponent's mascot!

Grilled Razorback Ribs
Ingredients
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
3 slabs baby back pork ribs (about 5 1/2 lb.)
2 limes, halved
Bottled barbecue sauce
Preparation
1. Combine kosher salt and next 2 ingredients. Remove thin membrane from back of ribs by slicing into it with a knife and pulling it off.
2. Rub ribs with cut sides of limes, squeezing as you rub. Massage salt mixture into meat, covering all sides. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Place in a 13- x 9-inch baking dish; cover and chill 8 hours.
3. Light 1 side of grill, heating to 350° to 400° (medium-high) heat; leave other side unlit. Let slabs stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Remove plastic wrap. Place slabs over unlit side of grill, stacking one on top of the other. Grill, covered with grill lid, 40 minutes. Rotate slabs, moving bottom slab to top; grill 40 minutes. Rotate again; grill 40 minutes.
4. Lower grill temperature to 300° to 350° (medium) heat; place slabs side by side over unlit side of grill. Baste with barbecue sauce. Grill 30 minutes, covered with grill lid, basting with sauce occasionally. Remove from grill; let stand 10 minutes.
(Southern Living - August '11)

If a pulled pork sandwich is more your style, whip up these grilled pork sandwiches at your tailgate!

Grilled Pulled Razorback Sandwiches
Ingredients
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper
2 (3/4-lb.) pork tenderloins
Vegetable cooking spray
6 whole wheat hamburger buns
6 tablespoons Vidalia Onion Barbecue Sauce (see recipe below)
Preparation
1. Stir together first 4 ingredients; rub pork tenderloins evenly with seasoning mixture. Lightly coat pork with vegetable cooking spray.
2. Grill, covered with grill lid, over medium-high heat (350° to 400°) 10 to 12 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer inserted into thickest portions registers 155°. Remove from grill, and let stand 10 minutes. Chop or slice, and serve on hamburger buns. Drizzle each sandwich with 1 Tbsp. Vidalia Onion Barbecue Sauce.
Note: Nutritional analysis includes 1 Tbsp. barbecue sauce. (Southern Living June '07)

1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Preparation
1. Stir together all ingredients and 1/2 cup water in a large saucepan; bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, 20 minutes.
